Our fascination with famous people isn't necessarily a bad thing.  We keep track of famous birthdays because they (more often than not) reflect accurately the traits of the zodiac.  While entertainers aren't the only ones, they're the ones that have chosen to be in the spotlight.

EMOTIONAL DECISIONS.
NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES EXTRA MAINTENANCE.

You can learn to get close without getting clingy. Develop inner security and you earn the right to love. Keep your body moving. Enjoy regular physical activity. Remember that not all digestive problems are from what you eat, sometimes it's what's eating you.

OBESITY: A SPECIAL CANCERIAN CHALLENGE
Fatty Arbuckle - one of the first real celebrities in the film industry, Fatty was getting $1 million, unheard of at the time, until scandal hit . He weighed 266 lbs. by the way. Arbuckle was charged with murder at 32 years old under scandalous conditions. His career was ruined. Read more ...

Raymond Burr - made his first film at 29 years old. Most famous for the Perry Mason series on tv, but played in A Place in the Sun opposite Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters (legends). His film career ended at his second Return with the demise of the Ironsides series. Raymond Burr may have had a glandular condition which caused him to reach his height of 6'3" before junior high school and a lifelong battle with obesity, at times topping 300 lbs. At 35 he lost his son to leukemia and his third wife to cancer. He was decorated with a Purple Heart in World War II. Raymond quit school in his early teens to support his family. Read more ...

Jackie Gleason - Jackie's alcoholic father abandoned the family when he was eight years old. He left school early and supported himself as a pool hustler, professional boxer and carnival barker. He landed his big break as host of Cavalcade of Stars at 34 which led to the 39 marvelous episodes of the Honeymooners. One writer [David Marc of www.museum.tv] describes his skits as "personal visions of despair and grandeur culled from his poverty-stricken Brooklyn childhood". In 1954 Gleason presented the idea of using the new boom in frozen foods to market dinners for dieters, quick frozen meals packaged with complete nutrition and calorie information. After his second Saturn Return, Gleason revived a lagging career playing a Southern sheriff in the three Smokey and the Bandit films made between 1977 and 1983. He was often teased for his weight on The Honeymooners.

Marquis de Sade - The Marquis de Sade wrote several well known book but is more notorious for having given us the word sadism. The Marquis married against his will and was hounded most of his life by his mother-in-law who had him imprisoned. It was possible at that time in France to more or less buy a warrant for someone's arrest. The mother-in-law was both rich and relentless. The Marquis was released from prison at about the time the bastille was stormed and spent many years working for the insurrectionists. When Napoleon took power, he was again imprisoned. The Marquis may have become obese due to sexual frustration but he is often described in his later life as quite obese.

A recent movie about the Marquis de Sade is called Quills, not extremely accurate but an interesting movie on a difficult topic.

Body Wars keep women “in their place.” they are systematic, institutionally sanctioned, and economically driven.
Sample questions from this great book review:

  • Pay attention to how companies, the media, and other institutions treat fat people.
  • Ask yourself if you think negatively about a woman “who doesn’t keep herself up” or distrust a woman whom you see as too attractive?

The challenge of Saturn in Cancer is to respect emotions without blocking them or allowing them to spill into every area of life. This placement can be defensive, self-protective and highly territorial. Nationalism, tribalism and ethnocentrism may run amok during this transit. The point, however, is to extract the meaning of one's group without confining oneself within its limits. The need to protect hearth and home are evident, but not at the cost of suffocating ourselves in duct-taped rooms.

Saturn in Cancer places a restriction on the show of emotions. You have a tendency to hide your inner thoughts and feelings; there is a self-protective coating where emotions are concerned. Home and family weigh heavily on you, and you may give up opportunities to respect these obligations. Family is both a bond and a burden. Often, there is a lack of closeness and warmth between family members. Positive inner action between you and your parents, or you and your children, can be cause for concern. You may love them very much, but it's difficult for you to show your feeling. There is an obligation of responsibility associated with this placement that makes success in the outside world difficult to attain.

PARENTAL LEGACIES: CHILDREN MARKED FOR GOOD OR ILL BY THE FAME OR NOTOREITY OF THEIR PARENTS
Drew Barrymore - related to famous actors Lionel, John and Ethel Barrymore. She tried alcohol for the first time at age 9, and marijuana at 10. Soon after, she turned to cocaine. She divorced her mother at 15 and went off on her own. She has her first Saturn Return coming up.

Angelina Jolie - daughter of Jon Voigt, from whom she seems to be estranged, Angelina wanted to be a funeral director; has several scars from playing with knives and is openly bisexual. Her first Saturn Return comes in.

L:iza Minnelli - born famous! Frank Sinatra was the first person to drop by the hospital to see the new baby. Minelli is the daughter of two of Hollywood's leading artists at the time, Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, director of Gigi. At 27 she was on top of the world, reaching the pinnacle of her career before her Saturn Return playing Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. Around the time of her Saturn Return, she succumbed to the substance abuses that had plagued her mother. Things seemed to be going better, but as her second Return approaches, she has hit the headlines in some particularly humiliating and insensitive ways as her husband sues her for $10million in divorce settlement.

Enrique Iglesias - Enrique has established himself as a successful bi-lingual peformer. His first Saturn Return is approaching.

Michael Douglas - Michael Douglas is the son of Kirk Douglas. At about the time of his first Saturn Return, he bought the rights to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest from his father, which went on to win him an academy award. As his second Return approaches, he is starring in a film about the "Grombergs", called It Runs in the Family, starring various members of his own family, Kirk , Cameron and Diana Douglas. The trailer says this is a story about the "loving, frustrating, reassuring, insane, and ultimately inescapable bonds of family".

MotherLove
MotherLove, so characteristic, so Cancerian, is expressed by D. H. Lawrence who may be expressing what many feel who are not as frank as he. Lawrence adhorred his father and loved his mother, as follows:

"My mother was a clever, ironical, delicately moulded woman of good burgher descent. She married below her. My father was dark, ruddy, with a fine laugh. He is a coal-miner. He was one of the sanguine temperament, warm and hearty, but unstable. He lacked principle, as my mother would have said. He deceived her and lied to her. She despised him - he drank.

Their marriage life has been one carnal, bloody fight. I was born hating my father : as early as ever I can remember, I shivered with horror when he touched me. He was bad before I was born.

This has been a kind of bond between me and my mother. We have loved each other, almost with a husband and wife love, as well as filial ,and maternal .... It has been rather terrible and has made me, in some respects, abnormal .... I think this peculiar fusion of soul ... never comes twice in a life-time - it doesn't seem natural."

The Geographical Background of the Early Works of D.H. Lawrence, Claude Sinzelle, pgs. 78 and 79 [cited]

How can you participate in creating a secure community when you can't trust anyone? Buidling bigger walls may make you feel more secure on the one hand, and more isolated on the other. The downside of tight security is the loss of personal freedom, but when you're nervous and edgy, any contact can feel threatening and invasive. It's not that you don't care about people, it's just the risk of being hurt, exposed, or controlled can feel too great now.

With Saturn in Cancer, any show of emotions can seem excessive and the tendency is to stay close to home. The less you expect, the less you'll get, and the more pessimistic you feel, the more those feelings will be confirmed. You can build on your feelings of sorrow and lack, or you can choose to build a realistic foundation slowly and patiently.

HAREM: THAT'S WHAT THIS ENERGY IS
Harem energy breeds anxiety in mothers and children that is culturally underwritten. That is also some of the worst use of Cancer imaginable. Anyone who has to feel big and strong because someone else is neurotic and helpless ought to be lashed with the wet noodle.

Let's rejoice this year in the progress of women in the world. Let's not cripple our children with feelings that the world is a frightening place. Please don't claim 911 as a personal property. Your odds of being in a terrorist situation are probably pretty small. Have confidence in others whose chosen field it is to protect us. Have confidence in your own intuition or learn to develop it so you'll be safe. Intuition is about being in the right place at the right time. It is also about NOT being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Here are some books to celebrate with.

Valide, a Novel of the Harem (Valide: a sultan's mother who runs the harem)

Rambaud on the Mongol Yoke and the Influence of the Tatars on the Russian Development [excerpted from Alfred Rambaud, Russia, Leonora B. Lang, tr., vol 1 (New York: Collier, 1900) pp 123-129 quoted on line
Russian women lived in seclusion similar to harems.

The White Sun of the Desert: A film about Russian harems with a fascinating history itself.
[Quoted from PRAVDA online] Over the thirty years of his fame, the film -- whose circulation grew to dozens of thousands of copies, and which every inhabitant of Russia watched at least two or three times -- was not given a single national award, while Motyl's life grew increasingly problematic. On several occasions, he was nominated as a candidate for the State Prize. He was ignored on each occasion. In the long run, Russia's first President Boris Yeltsin personally decreed to award Motyl an Order of Honor of Russia /1995/ for the film "White Sun of the Desert." Today, the film enjoys the status of a national amulet and "lucky charm," which travels into space with cosmonauts and abroad with athletes, is screened on TV during national holidays, a film which drives away ill feelings, cures diseases, restores your health, and raises your spirits.
Read more about Vladimir Moytl, the creator of this film from 1970.

And one of my personal favorites, Harem.
In pure fantasy, sexy Ben Kingsley plays an OPEC oil minister who visits New York and falls for a beautiful stockbroker (Nastassja Kinski). He arranges to have her kidnapped and brought to his country where she becomes the latest addition to his burgeoning harem. The story has a different twist to it. The movie is underscripted but beautifully photographed and has some interesting scenes of the inside of a harem.

Enjoy these books and films, knowing that we are lucky enough not to be living under those conditions.

FatherHunger: the Inner Child and the Inner Father

Astrology by Vid
From June 2003 through July 2005, Saturn will travel through the emotionally potent sign of Cancer. This brings immeasurable possibilities for positive and negative effects. Will the warmth of Cancer grant Saturn a stronger sense of compassion, or will it give him an excuse to kick us until we cry?

Cancer opposes Saturn's ruling sign, Capricorn, so there is an intrinsic conflict between Saturn and the sign he will be in for the next two years. Imagine if you will a serious relationship between a Cancer and a Capricorn. It's almost comical. The Cancer will wonder why the Capricorn uses the word "softie" as if it's an insult, and the Capricorn will grow tired of replacing every "this is" with "I feel." Unless, of course, they come to a mutual understanding and find ways to communicate that accommodate both the mind and the heart.

That, my friends, is the key to surviving Saturn's transit through Cancer. Is peace possible between the inner father and the inner child? Can the critical voice within you learn to be sensitive of your emotions? Can you turn the internal policeman into an internal Ann Landers? I certainly hope so. If not, I'll be the one to start the support group.

FATHER HUNGER: THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE INNER FATHER AND THE INNER CHILD:
Here are two books I would recommend. There is a connection between this hunger, body image and obesity, all fruitful themes for Saturn's passage through Cancer.

Father Hunger by Margo Maine and Craig Johnson

Ditto by Robert S. McGree|

The Search for Lost Fathering a good article by James L. Schaller, M. D.

Resources for Fathers and Their Children - wonderful site of recommended books for divorced fathers and all dads.

Saturn is not particularly comfortable during its travels through Cancer, the sign of its detriment (opposite the sign ruled by it—in Saturn's case, Capricorn). Saturn likes to build fences, set boundaries and construct sturdy systems according to a series of carefully strategized and executed steps. Cancer is a soft energy of free-flowing, rising-and-falling, hard-to-contain watery emotionalism. Easy to imagine how these two astrological concepts would have a hard time meshing.

While Saturn is traveling through Cancer, we can expect to come face to face with the discomfort of uncontrollable feeling and may try, without much success, to curb this flow of emotion. We might be apt to take a harsher approach toward nurturing ourselves and others, and must watch out that we not withhold much-needed affection in an attempt to "whip" ourselves or others into shape.

Of course, a positive side of Saturn's transit through Cancer could be attained through finding focused and disciplined methods for displaying our caring—writing or creating art that contains deep feeling, setting structured time aside for caretaking activities, expending measured effort on healthy cooking, giving and receiving massage and other bodywork to keep the body warm and emotionally activated.

People with strong Cancer and Capricorn energies in their charts must be particularly aware of Saturn's tendency to bring sobering (i.e., depressing) feelings. It's utterly important to treat these emotions with kindness, rather than expecting ourselves (as a harsh authority figure might) to simply snap out of it.

[Quote from the website] Rossetti's work as an artist is best understood by remembering that he was also a great poet. The vast majority of his pictures are more or less explicitly literary. Indeed, even in cases where no literary equivalent exists for a picture, Rossetti would often create a text, as in cases like Found, La Bella Mano, and The Question. This literary inertia in his pictures underscores their determined intellectualism. The persistence of erotic subjects, and the subjective passion of his style, has obscured this important quality of all his work. To miss it, however, is to miss what is most salient and original about him. As T. Martin Wood acutely observed many years ago, Rossetti strove "to attain in art not an imitation of life but an expression of his ideas about it".

Achernar
With Saturn in Cancer, your upbringing has left you with a conscience structure which suggests the possibility of deep-seated emotional insecurities, for your ability to express your emotions spontaneously is restricted, ( in your own mind ), by the need to put practical considerations before emotional ones, engendering a type of "business before pleasure" philosophy.

It is not that you are insensitive emotionally, quite the reverse: you are so sensitive to your feelings that you feel you have to keep them under control. You may also try to prevent other people from sharing their feelings from you for fear that you will become upset: if you do this, you will compound the problem by appearing to be cold and unfeeling.

The way to deal with your emotional difficulties is to develop more trust in the world, then you will become able to share your feelings with others. This may seem hard at first, but as you develop more experience in the world of emotions, you will find that you can be one of the most caring and cared for people, precisely because you have had so much experience learning to deal with your feelings.
