. One prevalent theme is the idea that you have been bestowed with gifts that you MUST use. In other words, the gift comes with strings attached. it's somewhat like the little girl in The Red Shoes. Once she put on the shoes, she could not stip dancing. With Saturn in Leo talent can become obsession. Singing, writing and dancing could be joyous -- probably should be joyous -- but instead there is this terrible pressure to "make it" or "do it". It reminds me of the way Little League is treated by parents and coachs. What ever happened to childhood?
Georg is an excellent violinist and Audrey a superb pianist but they both prefer to play in private for their own enjoyment and it's no wonder. Georg's father forced him to compete in the Austrian village he grew up in -- sort of a mini Meistersinger. Being the favorite child, born after the war ended over there, and representing the "great hope" of the family, he was also forced to become an acolyte and participate prominently in church musicals and at holiday celebrations to which the whole village came. Audrey hid her piano playing while excelling at sports and chemistry which she was content to shine at in public. The piano was different. She can only play in private. But instead of bringing her enjoyment, doing it privately, she is tortured ALSO by desire for recognition and praise for her virtuoso playing. This is a double bind that causes her a great deal of stress. For those old enough to remember Liberace on record or live performance, Liberace is making fun of himself while he performs. He has Saturn in Leo.
Liberace is almost a caraciture of a performer and that is a tricky place for a performer to be. One might wish to get "lost in " the peformance, a sign of greatness or to give one's "all", one's honest best, but to be one step removed from oneself to the point almost of identifying with a potentially hostile audience .... Where did all the fun go, the personal warmth, the feeling of being lost in the gift of performance? One feels the presence of Saturn in Liberace's forced march, so to speak, and his comments, perhaps geared to head "it" off at the pass, pointing to outrageous clothes and jewelry, "You bought this for me" etc. It's as though he wants to critize himself before the audience does ... but where did this anticipation come from? Below is an image of Liberace from the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas showing his love for jewelry.
Those with Saturn in Leo want to have the glamour, the crowds, the thrill of being an icon. Somewhere in an ideal world, a child discovers a talent and uses it all the time because it's so fun.
Hermenaut says, "People loved Wladziu "Lee" Liberace for the same reason they love Las Vegas -- because he grabbed the branch of history -- along with the legacy of the upper crust -- and bent it down, down low, so the unwashed masses could easily reach its low-hanging fruit. Witness Caesar's Palace, which painstakingly re-creates the Roman empire down to surprisingly minute details, then turns around and stuffs it chock full of trash from tacky lowball haberdashers like Versace, Gucci, and Disney. Within the palace walls, a perfect replica of the statue of David, perfectly poised beneath an artificially luminescent sky, shares mallspace with a refrigerator magnet store... while Venus glances sidelong from her faux marble perch across the plaza...." Guess who else has Saturn in Leo? Elton John
In one of our first western cultural experiences of blessings turned to curses, we should look to the Apollo, also know as the god of Curses and the Oath Breaker. Please remember that in the ancient times a curse was serious business. People really believed that to be cursed was to be doomed to a certain fate just as later ona curse from the Pontificate meant roasting in hell. People made oaths as if their life depended on it.
Here is the story of Apollo and Cassandra.
Apollo, as you recall, was never lucky in love. Cassandra, pictured above, reneged on her promise to him and so he gave her the gift of prophecy with the curse that no one would ever believe her. In other words, Cassandra could foretell the future but when she tried to warn people, they would not listen.
Here is the poet Holbein being inspired by the god Apollo himself. The painting is by Elsie Russell, one of my favorite artists. Although this looks lovely in paintings and fancies the imagination, to be kissed by the god Apollo in real life can seem like a terrible curse. It is oppressive to be saddled with so much talent! So much inspiration!
