The eleven articles in the Saturn in Leo series:
. This is a reading for a young man who put a lot of effort into training to be a minister and then realized at his Saturn Return that he was an atheist. He was suffering about this situation and asked for an early Saturn Return mini reading. He didn't like his first answer and wrote again, rather petulantly, so this is the second answer. It has much relevance to the god and godlike issues of Saturn in Leo and so I am putting part of it here. This man has Saturn in Leo in the 10th house, indicating a great deal of time must be spent coming under the proper relationship with the "Source". However, this article also deals with general Saturn in Leo issues and will be of interest to all in the age groups. IT BEGINS: You have greatness within you and you are cowering before it. You want to lead your fellow men but you found out you were going to lead them down a blind alley to a dangerous dead end and it freaked you out. So now you are badly shaken and licking your wounds. Well, you're not the first man in the world that happened to. Be so glad it happened now and not 30 years from now.
You Think Some Great Power Failed You The lights have gone out temporarily in your world and you think some great power failed or more importantly failed YOU, but what you don't realize is that YOU are the person who is supposed to relight that fire. You are the Sun you are looking for. You are the warmth you are looking for. You are the Caring Creator you are looking for. Find this out and then you can lead other men from darkness to light which is your dearest desire. Re-Create yourself. Create your life and then other men will follow you. You are free to create any way you choose for you are omnipotent. There is greatness within you. I am reading your Saturn specifically in the 10th house. I'm not describing greatness in some a narrow Sunday School sense, like you'll go to heaven someday if your shoes are all in a row in your closet and you never step on an insect or masturbate or hurt a girl's feelings. Good grief. Get on with it. Life is an exciting adventure or it is nothing at all. When the world rejected Churchill, he learned to do masonry and built walls. In so doing, he rebuilt himself, his world. We create these things. We are creators.
What You Need, My Dear Young Man, is a Hero Maybe everybody around you is wearing white gloves (?) Were you Episcopal or something? That style of religious experience won't work for you. What you need, my dear young man, is a hero of a god. Heroes are everywhere, past, present and future. Personally I prefer mine in literature and history. They're a little hard to come by out here in Jamul, California . Churchill and the Duke of Wellington inspire me tremendously but they had their struggles. You aren't the only person in the world whose map has fallen apart. Look what Napoleon said at his first Saturn Return: "The veil is torn…. It is sad when one and the same heart is torn by such conflicting feelings for one person…. I need to be alone. I am tired of grandeur; all my feelings have dried up. I no longer care about my glory. At twenty-nine I have exhausted everything."
Keep a sense of humor. Keep looking until you find what it is that is great in us, in humans, in spite of all our stumbling around. You are not an atheist. You are the farthest thing from an atheist, but you looked in all the wrong places for God and I strongly suggest it was to find someone/something, some greater power that you could easily please. You can be very lazy that way with a sort of smirkingness about your greatness. So now that you don't believe in God anymore, you have your greatness back in the cheapest way possible. You diminished God so that makes you a man? Think again. It's not that easy. What you are looking for is inside of you. You are the God you wanted and you, unfortunately, are not an easy God to please. See what you have done to yourself. It is really marvelous. Someday when you're an old man in a rocking chair, you can look back and figure all that out but for now, move forward. You aren't cut out to be a philosopher which is what that kind of religion really is, and it upset you to find that out because it upset your little world where you like to have all the dishes washed and put away. Real life isn't like that . It is much more wonderful than that. Much more complicated than that and it takes some red blood to get out there and get a hold of it. In the real world, people throw up, break dishes, leave them sitting on the sink for days. Some people, for heaven's sale, don't even have dishes and some people honestly prefer to use their hands instead. Life is a multifarious and very wonderful thing, a coat of many, many colors and you chose a very vapid world that fortunately evaporated in time for you to get a real life. You can be as passive as a 13 year old girl sometimes. I know this from looking at your chart. Don't sit there and wait for it to present itself to you, go looking for it. Your fear of the Bible and all that is fear of your greatest weakness which is your desire to please someone or something very pasty and worthless, and you know it. You fought that away from you so you would not take that easy route, would not sell out, but YOU did it so at least you have done something! You used to try and please God because you thought that was something you could easily do (be honest with yourself, that is the truth). When you found out it was a "crock of shit", as you describe it, now you are very afraid because you know something is really going to be asked of you. Don't worry, you can do it! Look in the mirror and please the only god that really matters, YOU. You are a very demanding God to please and you will not let yourself get away with anything superficial.
Be glad because you are going to get the best out of yourself. You will not settle for what religion would have asked, which is practically nothing, the kind of religion you were holding hands with. The kind of religion you will find within yourself won't hold your hand and look longingly into your eyes, she will throw herself down on top of you and demand that you be a man. God is within. Read Tolstoy. Gandhi did. Go further afield in your search for a God you can respect. You are a creator looking for prima materia, something to create a god from or with.
I would be more than happy to do a complete reading for you but in the meantime, print this out and carry it around with you for a few years.
THE GRAIL QUEST IS YOU TS Eliot, perhaps the greatest English poet of the 20th century (who had Saturn in Leo), wrote The Wasteland, a very famous poem about loss of light, loss of spirit ...based in part on the Grail Quest legend (like Parsifal pictured twice above). Parsifal was the knight who went in search of the Holy Grail, the cup which Jesus had drunk from at the Last Supper. This story has been grafted on to older Celtic legends such as those surrounding King Arthur.
The Grail Quest has been the subject of endless exploration by people in many field. It is a legend which is central to European development. In the story the Old King is languishing, impotent, and so his kingdom suffers. You are the Old King and your kingdom is your life. The young knight Parsifal must obtain the Holy Grail by asking the right question. You are also the young knight Parsifal. This is your quest, Saturn in Leo, more than any others'. Read about the Grail Quest but read about it as Joseph Cambell suggests, in the present tense and using the word "I". Grail Quest Legend >>>

Joseph Campbell's Ten Commandments about Reading Myths >>> Every person with Saturn in Leo must in some sense or other go on this quest. When god is dead, you must resurrect him. You must do this through seeking, through asking the right questions, through rekindling your natural ability to adore and worship, sometimes beginning with yourself.
What happened to this young man is a common theme for Saturn in Leo. His god died. We make gods of many things, many people. We consecrate them and breathe life into them. We create them. Many have written about our co-creative relationships with the God in the Bible. Two books like this are Jungs's Answer to Job an The History of God. The premise of these books is that God evolves because we evolve and demand a better God. It is like this in our little lives as well. Just as we create our worlds and destroy them to build better ones, we create our gods and destroy them to create better ones.
Saturn's Role This young man is caught up in the powerlessness of Saturn which is lying to him and telling him that God is something that exists outside himself or outside a connection between God and himself. He has forgotten, thanks to Saturn's oppressive presence in this area of his life, that He Who Made that God can make another one. He has also forgotten due to Saturn's rigid boundaries and doleful lies about limitations, that this is in the nature of things. It is in the very nature of things to destroy and create new worlds. Every culture has a creation myth and in most of the, the Creator makes a world that is imperfect so he destroys it and creates another one. I am convinced that this is what our lives are meant to be like. We forget out powerful we are. Most of us are afraid to destroy anything. But those who are not are powerful gods in their own worlds. Every creator must also be a destroyer. This is the secret of creation. This is the special power of Leo, the Creative Force.
Even in the smallest ways we must destroy to create. If I go left today, I did not go right.
Learn to be a fearless destroyer and an intrepid creator. Look on your creation and see that it is good. If later you look on it and it is not good, destroy it and create another. This is how the shaman keeps the angel of death nearby. This is the secret of power, to always keep in front of you the notion of death, the reality of death. Then you will be fearless.
The idea, concept or image of God is very important to those with Saturn in Leo and especially in the 10th house. But there was no "Great Power" that failed this young man. What happened is he failed to seize the power to create something ne in the space his disappointment provided. This power is without limits in us. Those with Saturn in Leo know this. They do not hesitate to look on their creations with a critical eye for the future. With this outlook, every failed icon is an opportunity to create a more appropriate one. We should expect to outgrow our gods and heroes. But here is the critical part for Saturn in Leo. We should not expect to find new ones. We should expect to create new ones. The stuff from which we create is also what changes.
CAVEAT: Worship What You Please but Please Be Aware of What it is You Worship Jungian-based astrology, by the way, is neutral where belief in God is concerned. As Marie Louise von Franz puts it so eloquently, the difference between us and religion is that we do not believe God spoke once and it was written down and that's the end of it. We believe that God speaks individually to each one of us each moment. And we do not presume to know what "the answer" is or what God will say. We wait on the individual's experience of God. In looking for ultimate values, God is not always the path of the individual but sometimes He is. In Jungian astrology we look for the individual to find his or her own highest value. We do not presume to know what that is for the individual but a house influence may reveal guidelines. If there is an 8th house or Scorpionic/Plutonic influence, there may be a need for psychological pressure on the identity of the individual, often in the form of repeated crisis or trauma. This may prepare the individual for a spiritual experience later on and is necessary as a crucible of highest value though it is usually resisted and not consciously chosen. Here the passions are distilled as the individual more or less roasts in his or her own juices.
If there is a 9th house or Sagittarian/Jupiterian influence, the highest value or "god-ness" may be philosophy or cultural evolution. These people may personify the higher power as guides, adepts or masters. Meditation is often the path.
If there is a 10th house or Capricorn/Saturnine influence, they may seek "god-ness" in organized religion, a hierarchical structure and often the traditional patriarchal faiths such as Catholicism, Russian Orthodox, Judaism or Muslim. The structure of organized religions gives them comfort.
If there is an 11th house or Aquarian/Uranian influence, the highest value of "god-ness" may be a mission in life, a cause or seeing oneself as a godlike Promethean figure who channels new energy onto the planet. The individual may see the higher power as futuristic beings, science-fiction metaphors and extraterrestrials or Mind. Connecting in groups with others of like mind is often the path. Many astrologers have this influence but properly we hold the door open for each individual to be unique.
If there is a 12th house or Piscean/Neptunian influence, the highest value of "god-ness" may be a oneness, dissolving back into the divine, a feeling of connectedness with all of life. They may see the higher power as something to return to, to be called back into and personify it with angels, saints, divine beings and healing or comforting energy. If there is a memory of pain and suffering in being disconnected from the divine (involution before evolution), these individuals are often attracted to Buddhism.
These are the transcendental houes and planets that influence including the critical 8th house of crisis. For people who have a mundane or earthly, individual or social orientation, who are spared the challenge of contacts between outer planets and inner planets, nature magic, WICCA, rituals, daily rituals such as loving family, keeping house and providing, yoga and bodywork may give them a sense of purpose and aspiration, as may sensual pleasures such as the beauty of a sunset or the wind in your hair. These people are less likely to approach an astrologer for insight. Their answers may come from things they select and deify in the day-to-day or from watching the behavior of those around them for standards of conduct which enhance their self esteem and sense of self worth. It is not the astrologer's role to judge or choose among paths but to reveal to the individual the most natural path open to him or her and, just as importantly, to make him or her aware of choices being presently made. This is shown in the chart to the experienced astrologer. As a rule of thumb: We don't care so much what you worship as that you are conscious of what it is you are worshipping. Then you have free will and choice.
For example, if you worship food or sex and become conscious that this is, indeed, your god, this awareness may give you the free will to upgrade. We may elevate our objects of worship upon becoming more conscious of them. If you worship a principle , you can change that principle. If you worship a dark god such as greed or lust, you will experience the via negativa, as sure a path to enlightenement as any other, though dark and difficult on those around you. It would be rare for someone like this to consult an astrologer.
The nature of Leo is to adore and glorify. It is the special province of Saturn in Leo to create gods which can be worshipped, which deserve to be worshipped. It is worth contemplating, the extent to which the creation glorifies the creator and the extent to which the creation is in the image of the creator. This is the cutting edge for Saturn in Leo. Co-creation is Leo's greatest experience of the divine.
In closing, for inspiration, I will tell you about Enki's little mourners. Enki was a powerful Sumerian moon god. When the goddess Inanna was impaled on a meat hook in the underworld by her sister Erishkegal, Enki felt sorry for her and from the stuff you find under your fingernails, like toe jam only for fingers, he fashioned two little gods ... Kurgurra and Kalaturra to mourn with her.
