The Saturn Return occurs between the ages of 28 and 30. It marks the official end of childhood and "past lives" - the two are similar psychically and even psychologically. Perhaps you could say that when we come into this lifetime, we re-create the conditions of our past lives, be they "good" or "bad" which carry us through to the age of 30. After that, we're on our own! Officially into the new lifetime, through a "difficult birth" at the Saturn Return, now we create from our own life force. The Universe asks us to discover (actually "remember" would be a better word) what it was we came here to do and get on with it.

If you're in the habit of listening to people older than you, you may have noticed what dramatic changes people make in their lives at around 30. I can't think of anything more valuable for young people in their 30s and 40s than to read biographies of famous people as well. Here you will learn that no life is without difficulty and that many overcome hardship to succeed. Biographies are some of the most inspiring things you can read.

On a personal note, at times when I have most needed inspiration, I found greater inspiration in reading biographies than even in meditation ... it is as though the biographies are the answer to my prayer as I choose the ones that seem to be so pertinent to the issue I am struggling with.

Here are some examples of significant things people did at their Saturn Returns -- taken from the lives of many different people in different times and places so you can see how universal this principle is:

  • A 29 YEAR OLD WOMAN who had married an abusive man when she was just 17 finally found the courage to leave him. She took her three kids to another state to live with a nice older man.

  • ANOTHER MAN ended his career as a successful rock concert promoter (in the 70s), married, had a kid and began to sell real estate for a living - unfortunately he hadn't saved any of the money he made during the wild days!

  • ECKART TOLLE, author of "The Power of Now" had a conversion experience at 30 and began his life as a spiritual teacher.
  • VETERINARIAN has painful childhood including undiagnosed spina bifida and undiagnosed ruptured appendix. Both conditions are corrected and at thirty, he enters a period of twenty years without health problems and says he never felt good before he was thirty.
  • GWYNETH PALTROW'S father died just as she was starting work on the film about Sylvia Plath's life and suicide. After, she decided to take at least a year off, saying, 'I worked so much in my 20s, and I really burned the candle at both ends and I wasn't too picky about what I did,'she said. 'I think the combination of losing my father, turning 30, taking a year off has completely shifted everything.'" She has recently announced that she is going to be a mother.

  • Just turning 30, WINSTON CHURCHILL followed his father's footsteps, crossing the floor of Parliament to the liberals (over Tariff Reform), an event which would have lasting repercussions in his life.

  • FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE did the unheard of at 30. She left for the Crimean War, beginning one of the most influential lives of the early 20th century.
  • At his Saturn Return, NAPOLEON wrote, regarding his relationship with Josephine, "The veil is torn…. It is sad when one and the same heart is torn by such conflicting feelings for one person…. I need to be alone. I am tired of grandeur; all my feelings have dried up. I no longer care about my glory. At twenty-nine I have exhausted everything."
  • [footnote about love, 16 years later ...]: Josephine caught a cold in mid-May 1814, and despite a doctor's care she grew steadily worse. She died on May 29, in the arms of her son Eugene. Napoleon learned of her death via a French journal while in exile on Elba, and stayed locked in his room for two days, refusing to see anyone. Throughout her life Josephine had surrounded herself with the sight and scent of violets. Two days after his return from exile on Elba Napoleon visited Malmaison and collected violets from Josephine's garden. He would wear them in a locket until his death, a reminder of their tumultuous love. [website by Philip Bloom]

  • At 28 NICOLE KIDMAN began to make it into the big time on her own in films, moving out of the shadow of her husband, Tom Cruise. Perhaps this was the beginning of the end of the marriage a few years later.

  • STANLEY KUBRICK, turning 30, made his first major studio film, the powerful antiwar movie "Paths of Glory" starring Kirk Douglas.

  • At 30 MARILYN MONROE filmed "Bus Stop", met Lee Strasberg and Arthur Miller; and married Miller within the year.

  • JOHN FORBES NASH, JR. ("A Beautiful Mind") married, had a child and experienced the onset of his mental illness at about 30.

  • At 31, PRINCESS DIANA got her formal separation from Charles. The damaging book "Diana: Her True Story" by Andrew Morton came out the year before, revealing that the princess suffered bouts of depression and bulimia, even attempting suicide.

  • ORENTHAL J. SIMPSON ended his career with the Buffalo Bills (1969-77), going briefly to the San Francisco 49ers for two years after that.
  • Beethoven was aware of his impending deafness when he released his first symphony in 1800, at the age of 30. (His deafness was the onset of syphilis, so it had impact on many layers.)

  • ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER met his wife Maria Shriver at a tennis tournament when he was 30; they married two years later. 30 years later, preparing for his second Saturn Return, Schwarzenegger is elected governor and apologizes for his womanizing through the years.

Leo Tolstoy

  • At 30, LEO TOLSTOY ends a life of gambling, fornicating and murder (his own words) to start a peasants' school on his estate. This is the man whose book The Kingdom of God Is Within You influenced Gandhi to begin his passive resistance movement. Tolstoy also tries at this time to give his serfs their freedom and to give away his land to them but they are suspicious and refuse. 30 years later at his second Saturn Return, Tolstoy tries to will his estate and property to his serfs but his wife and children revolt.

  • Between the ages of 27-32 OSAMA BIN LADEN began spending more time in Afghanistan than Saudi Arabia. He would spend a total of eight months a year or more in Afghanistan. [Afghanistan is where he found the personal and material resources for Al Quaeda]

  • World War I ended and ADOLF HITLER turned 30. Having no where else to go, he returned to Munich and joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). Two years later he was elected party chairman or "Fuehrer".

  • The UNITED NATIONS has been going through its second Saturn Return this past year and next .. what a beating! Will it reassert itself and grow or ...morph into something else?

  • ROY HORN (Siegfried & Roy) was mauled right in the middle of his second Saturn Return
  • FREDERICK ENGELS was 28 and Carl Marx 30 when they published The Communist Manifesto
  • At 30 ROBERT MC NAMARA came down with polio and a week later so did his wife, who almost didn't recover -- his case was slight
  • ANGELINA JOLIE had the Mother of all Saturn Returns. Need I say more?

Now you have a better idea of the scope of this transit and the kinds of changes real people make in their lives at about 30 years old. If you're having difficult time, I recommend a full astrology reading. Your astrology chart reveals the patterns you chose to live out in this lifetime. When you focus on them, everything in your chart is geared to support this. When you forget who you are and why you're here, when you focus on something else, nothing works well. Perhaps you've been noticing this lately.

For some it will mean leaving behind a lifestyle they're accustomed to but which they have begun to realize they're outgrowing. Others will realize they are a square peg trying to fit into a round hole and that they will never be successful until they strike off on their own to find out who they are. Some may leave behind what seems to others to be a perfectly successful job, marriage or other arrangement. But deep inside they know they are living a lie and this is the time to find out and do something about it.

If you make a move for greater authenticity at 28-30 the whole universe supports you. Usually people find it's the most stressful time in their life. Never before or again will it be so stressful as it is for some of you right now. But believe it or not, it's also easier to make a major life move now than it will ever be again, for another 30 years.

I personally have helped several people make their transitions, and I can tell you that the one thing you don't want to be saying on your death bed is that you never lived. Any mistakes you may make in life cannot be worse than the feeling that you didn't give it your best try. And I'm not talking about a spotlessly clean kitchen floor either.

The most precious gift you can give yourself and the gift you give back to God in gratitude for the gift of life, is to find yourself and do everything you can to become yourself, your authentic self. This is a good time to review the heirarchy of needs based roughly on the Maslow Pyramid. The idea is that you can't move to higher levels, unless you have met needs at lower levels. Anyone who has the time and resources to read this article is likely going to make it to the top; however, many are called and few are chosen.

SATURN GOES INTO CANCER

This section of the article refers to people who are experiencing their Saturn Return who have Saturn in Cancer. It lists famous and infamous people who were born with Saturn at the same degree as you. These people are your "clan" from other times and eras, other generations. You can learn from their lives, how they used their Saturn in Cancer energy and the gifts or lessons they left behind, which is the heritage of this placement.

There is a final article which discusses this in greater depth if your interest is piqued. Suffice it to say, you have a very special connection with all the people on this list but especially those where Saturn is the same degree of Cancer as yours.

See if you can identify some similarities in the issues these people have dealt with, either well or poorly. Look for the date of your birth and then see who was born with Saturn in the same degree. Remember that you will have your first Saturn Return at around 30 and then another one at around 60 years old. Notice what these people did at their Returns (if they are old or or if they lived long enough.)

If you were born August 2 through August 11, 1973; December 27, 1973 through January 7, 1974; or April 18 through April 30, 1974, your Saturn is at 0 Cancer and your Saturn Return is June 5 through June 10, 2003.

He died in 1999 of lung cancer. His years between Returns were spent in broadcasting and as a coach and spokesperson.

He wrote a biography of her that was too bold for the tastes of the time as it included love affairs she had had and several attempts she had made at suicide. Because of this,
Wollstonecraft was condemned by the public as licentious. Her suicide attempts were construed as a lack of religious conviction. Mary Shelley's first baby died at eleven days old, one of those shocking coincidences produced by the powers of the subconscious mind. Shelley lost three other children before they reached adulthood. In 1822, after almost bleeding to death in a fifth miscarriage, her husband Percy Bysche Shelley, drowned. As her first Saturn Return approached, she idealized Shelley in her novel, The Last Man (1826). She died in 1851 of a brain tumor, thus she did not reach her second Saturn Return.

If you'd like to know why ... pick up one of her DVDs. At her first Saturn Return, her father died and she met the man who remained her manager for the rest of her life, Louis Barrier. After the death of her great love in 1949, she turned to alcohol. She became hooked to morphine in 1951 after a car accident. Ditto Drew Barrymore Note added March 2007, Jolie of course had the Mother of all first Saturn Returns. Dante Gabriel Rossetti 17 degrees - born May 12, 1828.
[Quote from the website] Rossetti's work as an artist is best understood by remembering that he was also a great poet. The vast majority of his pictures are more or less explicitly literary. Indeed, even in cases where no literary equivalent exists for a picture, Rossetti would often create a text, as in cases like Found, La Bella Mano, and The Question. This literary inertia in his pictures underscores their determined intellectualism. The persistence of erotic subjects, and the subjective passion of his style, has obscured this important quality of all his work. To miss it, however, is to miss what is most salient and original about him. As T. Martin Wood acutely observed many years ago, Rossetti strove "to attain in art not an imitation of life but an expression of his ideas about it".

Rossetti's choice of models and his idealization of them helped change the concept of feminine beauty in the Victorian period to the tall, thin, long-necked, long-haired stunners of frail health

At the time of Rossetti's first Saturn Return, and after an engagement lasting nearly ten years, Rossetti married Lizzie Siddal who died of a self-administered overdose of morphium less than two years later. After that he was involved in a difficult love triangle with his best friend and his wife. In the summer of 1872 he had a mental breakdown and later attempted suicide but seems to have recovered mentally while his physical health continued to deteriorate. He died of kidney failure on April 9, 1882.

Liza Minnelli 18 degrees - born March 12, 1946. Frank Sinatra was the first person to drop by the hospital to see the new baby. Minnelli is the daughter of two of Hollywood's leading people at the time, Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli, director of Gigi. Much of her childhood was spent in film studios with her hard working parents. At around the time of her Saturn Return, Minnellli was on top of the world, reaching the pinnacle of her career playing Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. She had romantic liaisons with Martin Scorcese and Peter Sellers and was muse to designer Richard Halston. She succumbed to the substance abuses that had plagued her mother, had several hip replacement surgeries and other hard times. She was recently remarried with much fanfare. As her second Return approaches, her husband sued her for beating him up in fits of rage and other humiliating and embarrassing claims. She countered by suing him for divorce.

REPRESENTATIVE REACTION TO READERS POLL ABOUT LIZA MINNELLI:

REACTION ON THE HARD SIDE: I have always felt that Liza was not really in touch with reality. She seemed like she thought she was nothing more than an extension of her Mother, who seemed to be Dorthy more than Judy Garland. It is really a shame that neither of them ever grew up. It was really offensive to me to see her slobbering all over her groom at their ostentacious wedding. Everything is for show, but what do they do for entertainment when they close the door. I would say they just go to unbelievable lengths including physical abuse. Now you have my curiosity peaked, I'll have to look up her Birthdate and get a wheel chart on her. But just by my instincts, I would say she goes beyond cruel and then expects others to just take it on the chin because she is who she is. Remember how depressed she had been . She is just looking to continue to follow in her Mom's footsteps and that is so sad. For pete sakes Liza, do better than your Mom pick yourself up and "Get a Life" not give it up. If you try hard you may find out who YOU are!

REACTION ON THE MIDDLE GROUND: I find her marital choices sometimes very peculiar. Why would a heterosexual woman marry a gay or seemingly gay man? (Peter Allen, David Gest)

REACTION ON THE SOFT SIDE: I always admired Liza and think of her as a great singer/ dancer/ actress. I loved her in Cabaret. Her feelings seem powerful and raw to me. She is unlucky in love and has had a rough journey.

REACTION 9.24.2004: My birthday is March 12 too. I saw her recently in concert. She is otherworldly for sure. She wore sequins, sang her heart out. She is using her ability to touch peoples hearts (pisces) in a big way, she got tearful on stage. I heard that she arrived for the perfomance in Seattle drunk at 10am. I think for pisces its hard to always be in this realm, I do wish her well. She is vuilnerable you could see that. She did a wonderful thing on stage - she wiped her makeup off and kept singing, she was more comfortable that way. Strength in vulnerabilty. YOu go Liza! -- Trav

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I 19 degrees - born September 7, 1533.
With someone of the stature of Queen Elizabeth I of England, it is hard not to write too little or too much. I decided to err on the side of writing too much, in case you would be interested in learning more about one of the more famous people with Saturn in Cancer or Saturn in any sign that ever lived.

Queen Elizabeth became queen of England at 25 and ruled for forty years over what is generally considered to be the "Golden Age" of Brittania! Elizabeth died at 70, having ascended the throne when England's low fortunes included religious strife, a huge government debt, and failure in wars with France. She left it when she died on the 24th March 1603, one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world. Elizabeth was dedicated to her country in a way few monarchs have been, then or since. Though she remains one of the best loved monarchs in the history of England , she as a person remains an enigma.

At her first Saturn Return, she had been on the throne for about five years and was hitting her stride. The most compelling events may indicate a "transfer of world power" in a certain sense. In the year of the Saturn Return, two people also with Saturn in Cancer died, Michelangelo and Galileo and two were born, Shakespeare (reputedly) and Christopher Marlowe.

Here are some other events in England

  • she became seriously ill with smallpox
  • her beloved old governess Kat Ashley died, someone like a mother to her
  • She refused a marriage proposal from Philip I (the "Handsome") of Spain
  • She condoned the beginnings of slave trade in 1563 while expressing sympathy for the slaves [History Channel Time Line]
  • Sir Thomas Gresham founded the London Exchange
  • 1563 the 39 Articles are published which define the Anglican faith

As her second Return approached, Queen Elizabeth was at the zenith of her power and popularity. Here are the events as the Return approached:

  • February 1587 - Elizabeth signs the death warrant of Mary, Queen of Scots. She is executed February 8th.
  • 1588 defeat of the Spanish Armada
  • death of Robert Dudley, trustsed advisor
  • Henry III of France is murdered; Henry IV changes to Catholic (1593)
  • Christopher Marlowe is killed
  • Sir Francis Drake died (he defeated the Spanish Armada)
  • Love's Labours Lost, Shakespeare's first play, is published
  • Globe Theater is founded
  • British East India Trading Company is founded
  • Essex revolted against her in 1601; she died in 1603

Queen Elizabeth's mother was executed when she was three.

Here are some others details of character and circumstance salient to Saturn in Cancer. These sections are taken from The Life and Times of Queen Elizabeth I by Heather Thomas which I recommend for further interest.

Elizabeth's birth was disastrous, and no one felt the disaster more than her father, King Henry VIII, who had moved mountains to obtain a son and heir. Henry had overridden the Pope, the Emperor, lost friends, lost the Church that he had once been a proud defender of, torn down the abbeys and monasteries, and put men to death whose only crime was their faith; all for what he already had, a daughter. He felt the humiliation deeply, and felt once again that he had not been blessed by God. There was little celebration at baby Elizabeth's birth. Bonfires were lit through out the land but with little enthusiasm. Anne Boleyn was unpopular. Many blamed her for the religious changes in the land and for the king's rejection of Catherine, who they had loved. However, Elizabeth was given a magnificent Christening at Greenwich when she was only three days old.

Her mother failed to provide the King with a son and was executed on false charges of incest and adultery on 19 May 1536. Her marriage to the King was declared null and void, and Elizabeth, like her half-sister, Mary, was declared illegitimate and deprived of her place in the line of succession. she was remarkably gifted. She had an especial flare for languages, and by adulthood, she could reputedly speak five languages fluently.

It is possible that at the execution of yet another wife, Katherine Howard, when she eight, Elizabeth swore never to marry. This according to Robert Dudley, her childhood friend and confidant.

It is also possible that she was molested at about 14 by Lord Admiral Thomas Seymour, the King's Uncle and Lord Protector of England. Again from The Life and Times of Queen Elizabeth I by Heather Thomas:

Thomas Seymour, a dashing man in his late thirties, took an unhealthy interest in his new step-daughter, who had now just turned fourteen. He was charismatic and charming, and it is possible that Elizabeth developed a teenage crush on him. But whatever her adolescent feelings for him may have been, Seymour took advantage of them, and began to visit Elizabeth's bedchamber early in the mornings to romp in the bed with her. Sometimes the Queen herself accompanied him, and they would both tickle her. Another time, they teased Elizabeth in the garden, the Queen holding her while Seymour cut up her mourning gown for her father....

What exactly happened between Elizabeth and Seymour will always be a mystery as the knowledge we have of her time with him and Katherine comes from the documents produced some time later when an investigation was taking place into Seymour's relations with Elizabeth and the other royal children. Certainly matters appear to have got out of hand, Seymour's interest in Elizabeth being blatantly sexual, and neither Katherine, Kat Ashley, or Elizabeth herself was comfortable with his behavior. Elizabeth would reputedly rise early so that when he came to her bedchamber in the mornings she would already be up and dressed. Matters came to a head when Elizabeth was reputedly found alone with the Admiral, and Katherine, concerned and perhaps a little jealous of his attention in the young girl, thought it would be better for her to leave the household.

Upon inheriting the throne:

Elizabeth was at her childhood home of Hatfield when Mary died on the 17 of November, 1558. She was reputedly eating an apple underneath an Oak tree in the great park when the news of her accession to the throne reached her. Elizabeth was now just twenty five years old, and Queen of England. For the first time in her life, her destiny lay in her own hands, and Elizabeth knelt on the ground and whispered in Latin what she truly must have felt: "This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes".

Here is an interesting anecdote vis a vis her FatherHunger which must have been enormous, Henry VIII being the bigger than life personality that he was. [The Life and Times of Queen Elizabeth I by Heather Thomas]

During a stay at the royal court Elizabeth managed to offend her father profoundly, for which she was banished from the Palace. What exactly this offense was remains unknown.... Henry's reaction was alarming, but with Katherine Parr's intervention, the episode blew over, and Elizabeth was allowed back to court.

For much fun, visit Screen Queens.

Ty Cobb 20 degrees - born December 18, 1886. Some consider Tyrus Raymond Cobb, aka "the Georgia Peach", the greatest baseball player ever. According to Hickok Sports Encyclopedia, he was "certainly the most feared and most disliked. He played as if driven by demons.... Cobb once announced, "I would cut the heart out of my best friend if he ever tried to block the road." His apparent hatred for the world and almost everyone in it probably stemmed, at least in part, from his father's tragic death in 1905. [Ty Cobb was nineteen.] Suspecting his wife of infidelity, W. H. Cobb climbed a ladder to look into her bedroom window one night and Mrs. Cobb shot and killed him. She was tried for voluntary manslaughter but won acquittal, testifying that she had mistaken her husband for an intruder. Cobb, who was very close to his father, saw his mother only occasionally after that and didn't attend her funeral." At his first Saturn Return, Cobb may have conspired withTris Speaker to fix the 1919 game between Detroit and Cleveland but was cleared of this in 1926. He retired at 41. He became wealthy from his investments, was twice divorced and estranged from his six children. He said in a letter to one of his friends, "My real weak spot is unjust criticism."

Cher 21 degrees - born May 20, 1946. Cherylin Sarkisian LaPiere, according to one reviewer, has "seemingly limitless determination". Born in El Centro, California in 1946, Cher was a poor, fatherless child whose eight times-married Mother struggled by on occasional singing gigs and brief movie roles. To Cher this was life and she delighted in watching her mother on stage and living a peaceful life in her family apartment. She met and married Sonny Bono, hit the big time and ended that whole phase of her life by the time of her first Saturn Return. Her career has continued in film and recording. Her second Return hasn't happened yet. She has always claimed Sonny was the love of her life and that she has made many dumb mistakes.

Artistic consistency is something you might expect with Saturn in Cancer, also "spectacularly emotive" . At his first Saturn Return, he produced the jazz and R&B mode Moondance, his most popular work. The album essentially laid the musical groundwork for most of the work Morrison would produce through the '70s; particularly in live performance, his show-stopping numbers are most often drawn from this album. He then returned to Ireland to get a better vision for himself. Now approaching his second Return, he has been putting out spiritual albums with great integrity. As his second Return approaches, he is "amazingly prolific".
Itzhak Perlmann 21 degrees
Marquis de Sade 21 degrees - born June 2, 1740. Hence the word sadism. At the approach of his first Saturn Return, de Sade's mother-in-law was closing in on him. She had him imprisoned regularly and could be considered his nemesis. He became an obese man in the fourteen years he spent in prison. At the approach of his second Return, Napoleon was storming Paris. His famous book Justine was enlarged and republished to great acclaim. He also wrote what some believe is his masterpiece, The Marquis de Grange. He died peacefully in his sleep at 74. In the final years of his life, Sade would experience his last and most tender - Constance excepted - romance: an affair with the lovely twelve-year-old Madeleine Leclerc, who also lived at Charenton. She would visit him often in his room (not without jealousy on Constance's part), and their love would continue through his final year of life - Madeleine's sixteenth.

Diego Rivera 22 degrees - born December 1886 with a twin brother who died a couple of years later. He began to draw by the age of two. He had a son who died from meningitis at two. At the approach of his first Saturn Return ... I will now quote from Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute: "During this period Rivera met Elie Faure, a doctor and a lover of the arts. Rivera’s 1918 portrait of Elie Faure seems to emphasize the man’s simplicity and at the same time his deep thoughtfulness. The time spent in making Portrait of Elie Faure was the foundation of a lifelong friendship between the two men. Faure rekindled Rivera’s enthusiasm for murals and prompted him to set off for Italy to study the works of the masters. There he saw frescoes that had been painted hundreds of years earlier. They were usually painted on the walls of churches so that everyone in a town or city could enjoy them. He knew then that he would return to Mexico to make paintings for all the people to enjoy. In the frescoes of Italy he saw how the need for a popular art capable of appealing to the masses -- telling them a story -- could be met." Approaching his second Return, he painted his most famous mural, Sunday Dream, in the Hotel del Prado. He died of cancer of the penis(very rare) in 1957.

Galileo 24 degrees - born February 15, 1564. At the age of eight, Galileo's family moved and he did not rejoin them for two years. Approaching his first Saturn Return, his father died, leaving him as the oldest son to provide for the family and more specifically, dowries for his two sisters. This led him to a professorship at the University of Padua which paid well. In 1592 as his first Saturn Return began, he gave his inaugural lecture and began an eighteen year teaching experience. These years, he later said, were the happiest of his life. After constant trouble with Catholic authorities, two events were triggered at the approach of the second Return: A man sympathetic to Galileo was elected Pope Urban VIII and his book Il Saggiatore (The Assayer) was published which described his new scientific method.

John Lithgow (Lord Tarquaad Shiek) 24 degrees
Christopher Marlowe 24 degrees born in 1564. Marlowe, who wrote Dr. Faustus, died in a ballroom brawl at his first Saturn Return. His plays may have influenced Shakespeare. Some believe he morphed into Shakespeare though this is not likely. Probably his death had to do with his being a government agent.
Carson McCullers 24 degrees - born in 1917. American author whose psychological novels and stories examined the secrets of lonely, isolated people. Many of her works are set in the South. McCuller's best known novel is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. She was pretty much pushed into stardom by her mother, who worshipped Better Davis, thus the name Bette. Bette's sister was killed in an automobile accident on the way to seeing her perform. Bette's career was really taking off at her first Saturn Return. In the 80s she had a nervous breakdown, perhaps brought on by drinking and depression. She married later in life and her career has taken off again. She is approaching her second Return as this is written.

In 1993 he completed his most challenging project, a glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris.
Alexandr Pushkin - born June 6, 1799. He is Russia's greatest poet. He took great price that his great grandfather was an Abyssinian slave of Peter the Great. He was exiled for his political activities in his twenties and approaching his first Saturn Return was pardoned by the tsar for his enormous popularity. His masterpiece Evgenii Onegini is considered the greatest masterpiece of Russian. He returned to St. Petersburg. Pushkin died in a duel before his second Saturn Return. He had a tortured and unhappy love life. He was defending his wife's honor in the duel (!)

By the end of 1593, he caught the attention of the Earl of Southampton who became his patron. Shakespeare made his formal debut as a poet. Shakespeare did not live to his second Saturn Return, dying in 1616.

If you were born August 4 through August 11, 1975, your Saturn is at 25 Cancer and your Saturn Return is September 18 through September 30, 2004 and December 17 through December 31, 2004.

Napoleon 25 degrees - born August 15, 1769 (three months younger than Wellington). At his first Saturn Return, he headed the army that would sweep him to victories across Europe. He was defeated by the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo. He did not live to his second Saturn Return. Rather he died as an exile from arsenic poisoning, probably from wallpaper in his room.

Here are some more details that will help you understand Napoleon's Saturn in Cancer.

Wellington once stated that his arch-enemy, Napoleon's presence on the battle field was worth 40,000 soldiers. Apparently Napoleon was someone to die for, a very charismatic person. Six hundred soldiers followed him to his final exile, aptly for Saturn in Cancer, of stomach cancer [source], perhaps brought on by arsenic poisoning, intentional by his jailors or inadvertently from his wallpaper. This is the kind of power that Saturn in Cancer evokes, the power of love. The person who is so unloved as a child becomes the father/mother to many later in life.

Although the adoration of strangers has its merits, it will never make up for what was missed in childhood. Like little Tsar Paul, deprived of vitamins amidst the incredible wealth of the Russian Empire, he never grew to his full potential. This is the pathos of such placement. The author Gulland on pbs said of the schoolboy Napoleon, "Oh, he's a scruffy guy, you know, that everyone was embarrassed about. He was so serious and he had no sense of humor and he was skinny. He was poorly clothed. His boots smelled. His hair was kind of hanging and he was unkempt. He was a sorry sight."

Thanks to modern science, we have an analysis of Napoleon's handwriting as a boy by Louis A. Gottschalk, Don DeFrancisco and Robert J. Bechtel, "Computerized Content Analysis of Some Adolescent Writings of Napoleon Bonaparte: A Test of the Validity of the Method." Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease 190, no. 8 (2002): 542-548" at this website.

"Three passages written by Napoleon when he was between twelve and sixteen years of age were assessed using the authors' PCAD-2000 software, which implements Gottschalk-Gleser analysis of verbal behavior. One or more of Napoleon's writings manifested elevated scores on scales for depression, anxiety and preoccupation with sickness. These findings coincide with the available biographical evidence regarding Napoleon's childhood. The authors note that their approach and their software would seem to be useful in psychohistorical research."

Napoleon is quoted by a childhood friend, "Always alone among men, I come home to dream by myself and to myself over to all the forces of my melancholy," Napoleon wrote. "My thoughts dwell on death …. What fury drives me to wish for my own destruction? No doubt because I see no place for myself in this world."

Millions of words have written about Napoleon, many of them by his enemies. The things I would like to emphasize in connection with his Saturn in Cancer is that he seems to have taken on the sorrows of his country as if his countrymen were his family.

The great impression this made on an impressionable child is reflected in this statement by Napoleon: "I was born when [Corsica] was perishing. Thirty thousand Frenchmen spewed on to our shores, drowning the throne of liberty in waves of blood... The cries of the dying, the groans of the oppressed and tears of despair surrounded my cradle from the hour of my birth." [source]

Only someone with Saturn in Cancer could have said something like that last line. It also seems he never forgave his father for not following the Corsican hero Pauli to his death rather than surrender.

Later Napoleon was, in a stroke of irony, sent to France to school where he was teased for his crude accent and mannerisms. The Corsican Assembly declared Bonaparte and his entire family "traitors and enemies of the Fatherland, condemned to perpetual execration and infamy." Bonaparte no longer had the right to live in Corsica. He had been given a death sentence by his own people. On June 10, 1793 he set sail for France with his widowed mother, three brothers and three sisters - a refugee family carrying with them all they owned in the world. Twenty-four years old, he was banished from the land of his birth forever. He was never to return. As a conqueror of France and am empire, he was not gracious toward Corsica because of these things.

Later Napoleon had the weight problem sometimes associated with Saturn in Cancer. By French measures he was actually 5'6" not smaller. This was the average height for a Frenchman of that time. Napoleon didn't gain weight until he left Josephine because she couldn't produce an heir. Perhaps it was his new wife Marie-Louise's good cooking or perhaps it was filling the empty place that was left without Josephine. Before marrying her he had eaten very simple foods, although he controlled much of Europe. After marrying her he began to eat much more elegant and rich foods causing an increase in weight. He also may have had hypogonadism, causing bloating. [Hypogonadism is a condition in which the testes in men do not function properly]

Josephine may have personified the Cancer of the Saturn in Cancer. Here is how she is described by Gullard on the pbs special, "Contrary to popular opinion, Josephine is submissive. Very calm and gentle, she was Bonaparte's haven of peace. Her only defect was she was a bit jealous and sometimes she would cry for nothing, but he would be able to come here to his wife and find a home and tranquillity. She was always ready to serve him. Sometimes she would be dressed in her best and she would be there with her entourage and wait for him to finish work. She was very soft and very gentle, which was important for Napoleon because she was the contrary of what he was."

Martha Raye 25 degrees
William Howard Taft 25 degrees - born September 15, 1857. President of the United States but much more distinguished as Chief Justice and before that, professor at Yale. He was an obese man and also very big. At his first Saturn Return, he was on his way to being created Federal court judge. At his second Return, he had left the presidency ("four uncomfortable years") and was on his way to Chief Justice.
Charlize Theron 25 degrees
Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington - born May 1, 1769. The Duke is a favorite of mine, so I'm writing quite a bit about him. SEE HIS FULL CHART.

With the first Duke of Marlborough, the finest soldier Britain produced (BBC online). Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin to the Earl and Countess of Mornington. "Fatherless at an early age, and neglected by his mother, he was a reserved, withdrawn child", according to the UK Government Prime Ministers website. He did not do well at Eton and his future seemed lackluster, to say the least. At his first Saturn Return, a perhaps little noted but signficant event occurred. His family changed their name (in 1798), remembering that Saturn in Cancer is about family. Wellington resigned his seat in Parliament and headed to India where he made a name for himself and was eventually appointed governor of a state in India. He defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 when he was approximately 46 years old. At around the time of his second Saturn Return, Wellington was both Commander-in-Chief of the British army and Prime Minister. The exact year of his Return, he passed the Catholic Relief Act against his will as Prime Minister. His failure as Prime Minister is warmly forgiven by a grateful nation for his victory at Waterloo. Wellington had a very unhappy marriage. It is unclear why he felt obligated to marry Hon. Catherine Sarah Dorothea Pakenham. She adored him and toadied to him which repulsed his affections. They had two sons. She also overspent the household budget regularly.

The Duke of Wellington is one of those men who permits Lt. Com. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) in A Few Good Men to sleep well at night. Wellingtonalso had Capricorn Rising and Mars conjunct Saturn in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn. Wellington's prospects in life seemed very limited but for a very positive influence from brother. The Duke has Sun/Uranus/Mercury in the 3rd house ruled by Aries. Undoubtedly this brother gave him his very will to live. I conjecture this from his chart. It is not stated in his biographies. His brother, who was the Governor or India, gave him a critical assignment in India at his Saturn Return. It was not gratuitous. Wellington had already shown himself to have talent as a military man.

The Duke of Wellington, on the other hand, is known for his iron will and cold menacing stature. He is quoted as having called the men who fought and died for him "the scum of the earth". This was probably literal rather than emotional, since the soldiers of those days were mercenaries, down and out. Some of the best material about Wellingtonon the internet is can be found on Napoleonic websites. Here is an anecdote that displays another side of this man. It is really a rather deep, touching look at the child in the man. In fact it was William Wordsworth, a poet born with Saturn in Cancer who coined the phrase, the child is the father of the man. No one would know better than Arthur Wellesley what matters to boys who are leaving home for the first time … amidst the horrors of war.

The Duke once met a little boy, crying by the road. "Come now, that's no way for a young gentleman to behave. What's the matter?" he asked. "I have to go away to school tomorrow," sobbed the child, "and I'm worried about my pet toad. There's no-one else to care for it and I shan't know how it is." Keen to ease the little chap's discomfort, the Duke promised to attend to the matter personally. After the boy had been at school for just over a week, he received a note: "Field Marshall the Duke of Wellington presents his compliments to Master ---- and has the pleasure to inform him that his toad is well."

Later in life, Benjamin Disrael said of him, "The Duke of Wellington brought to the post of first minister immortal fame, a quality of success which could almost seem to include all others." The official United Kingdom government website about its prime ministers has this to say. "Towards the end of Wellington's life, the glory that Waterloo gave him had deepened to reverence. The nation, from the Royal Family to the humblest subject, regarded him with something near to awe. No longer was he merely the man of battle, the clever and unyielding strategist, but the "conqueror of conquerors," "the mightiest of captains," "the supreme soldier." For the victory he had won over the greatest of adversaries had changed the face of the world."

The lonely and outcast boy comes full circle in the family of man. Source.

Of his capacity to care for other men, there is a letter he wrote after the Battle of Waterloo to a general who was worried about his pension. The Battle of Waterloo was fought June 18..

"My Dear General,

I have received your letter of June 9, and assure you that I shall have the greatest pleasure in recommending Prince Metternich the request you intend to make to the Emperor for the restitution of your pension.

Nivelles, June 20.

I began this letter on June 14 and, as there was no post that day, did not finish it. I was engaged with the enemy on Friday, when there was a post. I have since received your letter of the 15th, for which I am much obliged. You have seen what I have done, and I hope you will be pleased. Never have I seen a battle like that of the day before yesterday nor won such a victory, and I hope this is the end of Bonaparte. We are in hot pursuit of him.

I have the honour [sic] to be, my dear General, your obedient servant.
Wellington

After his death, Wellington lay in state at Walmer Castle for two months, an unusually long time even for a national hero and mourners flocked from all over the country to pay their respects. Perhaps no other English hero besides Admiral Lord Nelson is so appreciated.

Raymond Burr 26 degrees - born May 21, 1917. Very hard childhood. Quit school to support his family. Endocrine disorder caused him to reach 6'3" before junior high school and lifelong weight problem. At first Saturn Return he was wounded in World War II and gained to over 300 lbs. from the sedentary recuperation. He suffered the tragic loss of his son to leukemia in 1952. At his second Saturn Return, he ended the Perry Mason and Ironsides phases and moved into a variety of television roles.

I am putting his paragraph in his honor as a Saturn in Cancer person: "Diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1992, Raymond Burr finished a last Perry Mason adventure before visiting his island in Fiji one last time and touring Europe. The actor returned to his Sonoma Valley ranch, where he oversaw the dispersal of his wealth through charities, gifts to friends and the developments of grant and trust programs. After spending his last two weeks hosting farewell parties for his friends and former foster children, Raymond William Stacey Burr died at his home from the complications of cancer of the kidneys on September 12th, 1993." Sylvester Stallone 26 degrees - born July 6, 1946. At his first Saturn Return he starred in Rocky and became a cult hero, the personification of macho in America. Sylvester Stallone's two trademarks features, his drooping eyes and slurred speech, were actually the result of a severed facial nerve caused by forceps during his delivery. These abnormalities, coupled with his unfortunate first name (there were many Tweety bird jokes) made for a difficult childhood in New York's Hell's Kitchen. The eldest of two sons born to hairstylist Frank Stallone and chorus girl Jacqueline Stallone (Mrs. Stallone eventually became a practicing astrologer and a women's wrestling promoter), little Sly boarded with a woman in Queens between the ages of two and five, and only saw his parents on the weekends. Approaching his second Return, Stallone married Jennifer Flavin and began a second family. His daughter with Flavin has a hole in her heart. One of his sons with former wife Sasha Cazck has been diagnosed with autism. Stallone is a painter (his paintings sell for $40,000) and art collector, polo player and novelist.
William Wordsworth 26 degrees - born 1770. "The Child is Father of the Man". He lost his mother when he was eight and five years later, his father. Due to these difficulties, he was also separated from his sister, though they later lived together and some speculated that they were erotically attracted to one another. As his Saturn Return began, he and Samuel Taylor Coleridge began the English Romantic movement by publishing their collection of Lyrical Ballads in 1798. At his second Saturn Return, Dorothy had a serious illness after which she became an invalid. Wordsworth and his wife cared for her for the rest of her life. She eventually lost her mind. Later in life, Wordsworth was chosen Poet Laureate of England.

Brandon Boyd 27 degrees
Joseph Conrad 27 degrees
- born 1857 in the Ukraine, one of my favorite writers. Conrad's parents died of TB and he went to live with his maternal uncle Tadeusz Bobrowski at twelve years old. His uncle was an overriding influence on his life and left him a good inheritance. Approaching his first Saturn Return, he had made three voyages to the West Indies with the French merchant marine. At the approach of his first Saturn Return he was deeply in debt and was also either wounded in a duel or incurred a self-inflicted wound. He continued his career in the British merchant marine. At this time his uncle forgave all his debts which he considered a turning point in his life. At the approach of his second Saturn Return, he became financially secure for the first time in his life. At this time he also sold the American screen rights to his fiction. His influence on subsequent American and British writers was enormous.

Quotable quote: What makes mankind tragic is not that they are the victims of nature, it is that they are conscious of it. To be part of the animal kingdom under the conditions of this earth is very well - but soon as you know of your slavery, the pain, the anger, the strife . the tragedy begins."

Papa John Creach 27 degrees - born May 28, 1917. During his first Saturn Return he relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles. His career with the Jefferson Airplane ended at his second Saturn Return. He had a heart attack in the Los Angeles earthquake of '94 and died a month later.
President John F. Kennedy 27 degrees - born May 29 1917. Near his first Saturn Return, he was participating in World War II. He was also diagnosed with Addison's disease. He did not live to his second Return, being gunned down by an assassin's bullet in 1963. In 2002 Kennedy's medical records were examined by Robert Dallek, his official biographer. According to Richard Lacayo of CNN Online, it appears Kennedy was taking steroids for his Addison's disease, painkillers for his back, antispasmodics for his colitis, antibiotics for urinary-tract infections, antihistamines for allergies and, on at least one occasion, an antipsychotic (though only for two days) for a severe mood change that Jackie Kennedy believed had been brought on by the antihistamines." He continues: "D
allek believes that many of Kennedy's worst difficulties can be traced to the corticosteroids he took, perhaps starting as early as 1937, to relieve his colitis, an ulcerous inflammation of the upper bowel. Their heavy long-term use can promote osteoporosis -- progressive bone disintegration. They also suppress the body's immune system, leading to the kind of serious infections Kennedy frequently suffered. But other common side effects are hair that stays thick and dark, plus skin that turns the yellow-gold of a permanent suntan. Another would be intensified sexual drive. All of which suggest that Kennedy's very Kennedy-ness was partly a side effect of his medication.... In 1947 J.F.K., then 30, learned he had Addison's disease, a dysfunction of the adrenal glands that, among other things, regulate blood sugar and the body's response to stress. The treatment? More corticosteroids."

Cheech Marin 27 degrees - born July 13, 1946. Fleeing the draft, he settled in Canada at the time of his first Saturn Return, where he met Chong. Approaching his second Saturn Return, his partner Chong was recently arrested for selling drug paraphernalia on the internet.

Kirk Douglas 29 degrees - born December 9, 1916 as Issur Danielovich Demsky, the son of illiterate Russian Jewish parents. He was determined to leave behind the poverty of his childhood. He won a scholarship to college and worked as a janitor to pay his expenses. After serving in World War II, he made his mark in 1949 in a movie called The Champion. In 1958, Mr. Douglas broke the notorious Hollywood blacklist when he gave screen credit to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo for the Spartacus screenplay. Mr. Douglas was widely condemned for his decision at the time. It was not until 30 years later that the American Civil Liberties Union and the Writers Guild of America recognized his act as courageous. He tried for many years to make a movie of Cuckoo's Nest but at his second Return around 1976, his son Michael brought the rights and made an award winning film. Douglas is a well respected member of the Hollywood community. His films often have social conscience and often are a family affair, including his sons. Douglas' autobiography, The Ragman's Son, published in 1988, received rave reviews and became an international best-selle, on the NY Times' best-seller list for 34 weeks. Douglas starred in a new film by Michael Douglas this year (2003).
Betty Grable 29 degrees
- born December 18, 1916, the girl with the millionaire dollar legs (they were insured with Lloyds of London for $1.25 million). Her mother forced her into acting. At her Saturn Return, she became the poster girl for American GIs in World War II -- with a photograph that was taken ten years earlier -- and also married band leader Harry James. She died before her second Saturn Return of cancer.
Katherine Graham 29 degrees - born in 1917. Graham's father was a multimillionaire who bought Washington Post. He died at her first Saturn Return and left the paper to her husband. "My father said to me, and I certainly went along with it, that 'No man should work for his wife,'" she recounted in her memoir In 1963 her manic depressive husband committed suicide and she took over from there. She was named publisher in 1969, near the time of the Watergate break-in. At her second Saturn Return, her son was named chief executive. During her life time, some people called her the most powerful woman alive.
Baby Spice 29 degrees
Leo Tolstoy 29 degrees -born August 28, 1828 (old time). During his first Saturn Return, Leo Tolstoy, one of the world's greatest writers, returned to his estate from a self acknowledged life of philandering and began a school for serfs. He tried to give his property to his serf and he also tried to give them their freedom. They were suspicious and refused. Tolstoy married and has 12 children in one of the most tortuous of marriages. At his second Saturn Return he tried to will his property to his serfs and give them their freedom but his family refused to go along with it.

Poem for Turtles - an inspirational poem about the way many of you are going to turn out (!)

Sheltering Heart

I love the sheltering heart
the sky-wide soul
that makes sure the child in line isn't overlooked,
that sees the turn signal and let's you in,
or notices someone staring into a handful of change and says
"Can I help? It's no trouble."

The heart that grabs your hand,
looks you straight in the eye and says,
"Look at me. I can see you are hurting.
We have to talk."
Then holds all your convoluted ramblings,
your emotional injuries,
like they're tangled necklaces
of rubies and pearls,
sorts them patiently,
and smilingly places them all around your neck
like you're the princess
with a silly, wet kiss.

The heart that, in a crowded foyer,
isn't rushing for the door,
but scanning the crowd for tiny people,
pregnant women, the wispy elder with a cane,
and not afraid to say loudly,
"Easy does it, watch out for your neighbor."

The heart that like a big umbrella,
sits through endless, boring community meetings,
to be able to say,
"Is the playground still budgeted in?
Can we plant some trees near those benches?
Put a light and a phone booth near that bus stop?
A recycle bin near the picnic tables?"
Looking out for everyone.

A sensitive heart
that asks one last time,
"Are you sure you fed the dog?
Do you need anything from the store?
Would you like the last brownie?"

I love the sheltering heart,
whose peace increases with giving
which feels everyone's unspoken needs
fine-tuning the instrument of true living.

Ah, do I love the sheltering heart.
