• At 28 NICOLE KIDMAN began to make it into the big time on her own in films, moving out of the shadow of her husband, Tom Cruise. Perhaps this was the beginning of the end of the marriage a few years later.

• STANLEY KUBRICK, turning 30, made his first major studio film, the powerful antiwar movie Paths of Glory starring Kirk Douglas.

• At 30 MARILYN MONROE filmed "Bus Stop", met Lee Strasberg and Arthur Miller; and married Miller within the year.

• JOHN FORBES NASH, JR. (A Beautiful Mind) married, had a child and experienced the onset of his mental illness at about 30.

• At 31, PRINCESS DIANA got her formal separation from Charles. The damaging book "Diana: Her True Story" by Andrew Morton came out the year before, revealing that the princess suffered bouts of depression and bulimia, even attempting suicide.

Blaise Pascal 2 degrees - born June 16, 1623. A contemporary of Rene Descartes, Pascal published a significant work on geometry when just 16 years old.

At about the time of his first Saturn Return, Pascal's father died. This precipitated a religious conversion after which he devoted himself to religion instead of science, going from church to church in Pairs attending one religious service after another. His ideas about his father's death led to his later philosophical work, Pensees.

Georgia O'Keefe 6 degrees - born November 15, 1887. O'Keefe moved to New York about the time of her first Saturn Return and her paintings were introduced to Alfred Steiglitz who became her second husband. She divorced and married Steiglitz during the first Saturn Return.

At her Second SR Steiglitz died. O'Keefe moved permanently to Santa Fe, New Mexico. She lost her eyesight later in life but lived to be 98.

Eleanor of Acquitaine 7 degrees - born September 24, 1122. Eleanor of Acquitaine was one of the most powerful women in history, the wife of two kings, the mother of two kings. Eleanor was the richest heiress in France when she married the much older King Louis VII of France. The marriage was hateful. At the time of her first Saturn Return she was able to divorce Louis and married Duke Henry Plantagenet of Normandy, making him master of most of France and shortly thereafter helped him become King of England. She was 12 years his senior and bore him five sons and three daughters.

In 1173 Henry's sons revolted against him. Some historians say Eleanor was behind the insurrection. At any rate, she backed her sons and as a result was imprisoned by Henry until his death in 1189. She spent her Second SR in prison. In 1189 her favorite son Richard Coeur de Lion (the Lion-Hearted) took the throne and released her from prison. She ruled in his stead while he was on Crusade. Not the least remarkable thing about her was that she managed to live to be 82 in the Middle Ages (median life span probably about 50). Legend has it ... "while she undoubtedly underwent much deprivation during her imprisonment, she did not, when she obtained power, use it to punish her enemies, but rather devoted herself to deeds of mercy and piety, going from city to city, setting free all persons confined for violating the game laws, which in the latter part of Henry’s life, were cruelly enforced. Betty Ford 7 degrees - born April 8, 1918. Ford is known both as a former First Lady and as the founder of the Betty Ford Clinic for substance abuse recovery in Rancho Mirage, California. She married Gerald Ford during her first Saturn Return. During her Second SR, she was in alcohol drug rehab, recovering from painkillers and alcohol.

Orenthal J. Simpson 8 degrees - born July 9, 1947. Simpson's football career was over by the time of his first Saturn Return but his notoriety was just beginning. He was tried in 1996 for the murder of his wife at one of the most sensational trials of the 20th century.

At his Second SR we predict "suicide by cop". Simpson has Saturn in the 12th house and his subconscious may trip him up once again.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel 9 degrees - born August 27, 1770. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was one of the most influential western philosophers of the 19th century. He wrote about ethics, religion and politics. His philosophical system (very metaphysical) influenced Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. His system posited that reality is the result of a historical process (dialectic) whose ultimate end is an understanding of the essence of existence. Marx and Engels chose to interpret it politically and economically instead of metaphysically, They also failed to perceive the logical extension of this reasoning, that any system could not survive for ever. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis ... then thesis, etc.

Camilla Parker Bowles 9 degrees - born July 17, 1947. Parker-Bowles is the longtime companion of Britain's Prince Charles. They met in the early 70s. Parker-Bowles married someone else in 1973 and had children two years before and two years after her Saturn Return in 1977. It was during her Saturn Return that Charles met Diana. Parker Bowles divorced in 1995 and Prince Charles divorced in 1996. She will have her Second SR next summer. And she's gotten married!

According to HELLO!, "the down-to-earth, outdoorsy woman came under the public spotlight after Charles confirmed he had committed adultery with Camilla while still married to Diana. While controversy raged around her, Camilla chose to remain silent.

"After Diana's tragic death in August 1997, Camilla retreated from the public eye. It appears to have been Charles' son Prince William who extended the olive branch to his father's companion by inviting her to tea. At the request of the young Prince and his brother Harry, Mrs. Parker Bowles also accompanied Charles and his sons on a Mediterranean cruise in August 1999.

Carlos Santana 10 degrees - born July 20, 1947. Carlos Santana, born in Mexico, started the band Santana in San Francisco in 1969, combining electrified blues guitar with Afro-Cuban rhythms. He has sold millions of albums and performed before millions of fans.

During his first Saturn Return, Santana, disillusioned after the drug-related deaths of fellow musicians such as Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin, turned to the spiritual teachings of Sri Chinmoy.

In 1998 Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was evidently sexually abused by "an American man" when he was 10 to 12 years old. This trauma haunted him all his life. He is no longer with Sri Chinmoy.

T. E. Lawrence 11 degrees - born August 16, 1888. His extraordinary knowledge of the politics and culture of the Mideast permitted him to succeed.

Adolf Hitler 13 degrees - born April 20, 1889. Hitler was actually an Austrian, not a German. A decorated World War I veteran and frustrated artist (painter), Hitler was employed by the German government as a spy in 1919 -- his first Saturn Return -- when he investigated a small nationalistic group of idealists, the German Workers' Party. He wound up joining the party which morphed in to the NAZI party.

He committed suicide in 1945, a few years before his Second SR. The day before his death, he married his long term companion, Eva Braun. Braun and Hitler took cyanide and then Hitler shot himself.

Arnold Toynbee - born April 14, 1889. Toynbee was educated at Oxford University in England. He served the British Foreign Office during World War I and World War II. At the time of his first Saturn Return, he was a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference. He was a professor of Greek language and history at the University of London and later director of studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs for thirty years.

At his Second SR, Toynbee was publishing his great work A Study of History, which explored the rise and fall of civilizations. The main thesis of the work, according to www.encyclopedia.com, is that "the well-being of a civilization depends on its ability to respond successfully to challenges human and environmental. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 14 degrees - born July 18, 1918, Mandela was the former president of the African National Congress and of South Africa. He was elected secretary of the Youth League at his first Saturn Return.

He was inaugurated as the first democratically elected State President of South Africa on 10 May 1994 and served until June 1999 when he retired from public life. Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

According to the ANC Organization website, Nelson Mandela's "greatest pleasure, his most private moment, is watching the sun set with the music of Handel or Tchaikovsky playing, pleasures he was died during years in prison. Jean Cocteau 18 degrees - born July 5, 1889. Cocteau's father committed suicide when he was ten years old. The controversial French filmmaker met Picasso at the time of his first Saturn Return and together they went to Rome where they met up with Diaghilev who had formed Ballet Russes several years earlier . Cocteau prepared the ballet Parade which was a disaster, though successful a few years later.

He also began an affair with a 15 year old novelist, Raymond Radiguet whose death five years later started Cocteau on opium.

He returned to work in the early 40s largely due to his friend Marais and at his Second SR produced the phenomenon Orpheus, starring Marais.

One of the best selling authors of all time and definitely the world's greatest horror story writer, Stephen King wrote The Shining at his first Saturn Return. The movie was made in 1978. King confesses in On Writing that he had problems with alcohol at the time he was writing The Shining, and he also developed a drug addiction in the 80s. In June 1999 King was struck by a van and seriously injured.
King dis'd Kubrick's version of The Shining and put out his own miniseries later. His work has been described as "dramatically attenuated and thin on emotional substance, showing poor self esteem and easily threatened masculinity".

King's father deserted the family when he was three years old. He submitted his first story for publication when he was 13. His first novel, Carrie (1974), was a tale of a girl with telekinetic powers. King had thrown the first pages of the story in a garbage pail, but his wife rescued them and urged him to finish the work.

Danse Macabre, 1989, on writing: " It's not a dance of death at all, not really. There is a third lever here, as well. It is, at bottom, a dance of dreams. Yes, we are poor players that strut and fret our hour upon the stage, but who's the director? What's the difference between drama and melodrama? And what if we create from a destructive place?

At the end of On Writing, King talks of taking an afternoon stroll along the side of a country road, being hit by an out-of-control van, then waking up feeling like a character in one of his novels: "I’m lying in the ditch and there’s blood all over my face and my right leg hurts. I look down and see something I don’t like: my lap now appears to be on sideways, as if my whole lower body had been wrenched half a turn to the right.

I’m an alcoholic, I thought, and there was no dissenting opinion from inside my head—I was, after all, the guy who had written The Shining without even realizing…that I was writing about myself.

After all, as he writes, Writing fiction, especially a long work of fiction, can be a difficult, lonely job; it’s like crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a bathtub. There’s plenty of opportunity for self-doubt.

One day in the dentist's waiting room, I could swear I read an article about King's father being a manic depressive but I have not been able to corroborate that on the web to date.

Sir James Barrie 19 degrees - born May 9, 1860. The author of Peter Pan published his first novel at his first Saturn Return. According to a very assertive article on Bartleby.com, "Barrie's life was dominated by an extraordinary mother. This relationship left him emotionally immature and probably precipitated the failure of his marriage. His lack of maturity is a discernible element in all Barrie's works."

Between 1904 and 1915, Peter Pan played on the London stage to sold-out crowds every Christmas. It was a big part of the Edwardian cult of childhood.

The alternate title for Peter Pan is The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. Barrie's best work Dear Brutus was published at the time of his Second SR. He lived to be 77.

Emperor Franz Joseph 22 degrees - born August 18, 1830. It is hard to comprehend the personal meaning of Emperor Franz Joseph in his era, fin de siecle. Franz Joseph made an unfortunate marriage with the lovely Sissy, who was not happy in the role as Empress (not unlike Princess Diana of England). He died tragically at Franz Joseph's second Saturn Return, in a scandalous suicide pact with one of his mistresses Maria Vetsera. Thomas Jefferson 29 degrees - born April 13, 1743. According to the official Monticello website, the claim that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, a slave at Monticello, entered the public arena during Jefferson's Second SR while he was president of the United States (1801-1809).

Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton at his first Saturn Return and had six legitimate children. His reputation began to reach beyond Virginia that year when he wrote a pamphlet, A Summary View of the Rights of British America.

According to 1998 DNA tests, Jefferson may well have fathered a child or children by Hemings. Hemings was allegedly the daughter of Jefferson's father-in-law (!)
