Many people have asked me how to get started on their spiritual path. Here are some suggestions. They are completely personal. I recommend that you pick and choose according to your own intuition. It is always about your intuition and you develop it by learning to follow it. For example, I used to walk in the bookstore and a book would fall off the shelf to the floor in front of me. I figured that was the one I ought to read :-)

A Simple Start
One of my favorite books to begin with is by Joseph Murphy. It's called The Power of the Subconscious Mind.
cover

Billed as "one of the most powerful self help books ever written" ... it's true. Believe it! This small, easy to read book can change your life. You can go on from there to every book Joseph Murphy wrote. He is a gentle giant and was a prolific writer. See my trtibute page to Joseph Murphy.

Meditation
Meditation is always the best. It seems too simple but here as elsewhere in life, less is more. Meditation trains the mind up over the emotions and desires where the ego dwells. It brings the ability to connect with the higher power. It brings a still mind, intuitive gifts and creativity.

Meditation Classes
Most towns, cities, etc. have free meditation classes. Now that we have the internet, it is so easy to search for classes in your area. Type these words "Free meditation classes My Town" in a search engine and you'll find out how many wonderful resources there are.

In my town, San Diego, for example, free classes are taught by the Sri Chinmoy Devotees, the Taoist Sanctuary, the Spiritualist Church, a group called San Diego Meditation, Shambhala Buddhist Meditation, Paramahansa Yogananda's Self Realization Fellowship, in connection with Pilates and Yoga ....

The Sri Chinmoy Center teaches meditation on line HERE. Sri Chinmoy is the Bengali guru whose devotees run Jyoti Bihanga Restaurant on Adams Avenue.

As well as meditation, many centers teach Yoga, positive thinking and conscious vegetarian cooking.

You can also learn meditation in traditional settings where it is referred to as "stress reduction techniques" or "relaxation techniques".

Conscious Massage/Bodywork
The mind body connection is an important part of spiritual development and healing. You can progress by getting conscious massage and bodywork. It should be pretty obvious which are legitimate massage and which are not but if unsure, the best place to find one is on the bulletin board at a legitimate health club or spa or advertising in a holistic journal in your area.

Courses for Healers
Another thing you could do is see if there are any courses for healers in your area. Sometimes they do laying on of hands, or Reiki. Sometimes there are classes in psychic development. Learning to read Tarot cards is a good way to start, too. There are plenty of online classes that you could browse around for. It is always good to follow your intuition.

Try some courses online. Just follow your intuition. See what appeals to you.

Unity and Other Metaphysical Churches
I
began by going to a metaphysical church called Unity. Another church like that is Science of Mind. They aren't really churches so much as learning centers. They teach you how to think intuitively and to connect with your own higher power.

Chance are there is one of these centers near you. They hold services on Sunday and also classes during the week in anything from healing to hypnosis, rebirthing, recovery, etc.

Great Books for and about Healers
I read a lot of great books by and for healers. Just anything with "healer" in the title could be of interest. I read many of them, about famous healers such as Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Edgar Cayce (a channel and psychic), and others whose names I don't remember but I will always remember their stories. I love to read about healings!!

Information about infp, the Myers-Briggs "Healer"
So many of my readers are infp introverts, I thought I'd make a special section for them (us). Most introverts are very, very comfortable reading and make an easy connection that way. When healers or psychics describe how they do their work, it helps you tap into your own powers and ways that you might want to do it.

Natural Magic or WICCA
Another way to go is natural magic or WICCA. They call themselves "witches" nowadays but they are just trying to sound spookey! They use nature rituals and things like that to get in touch with the healing powers! You can do a search for some of those websites.
