I have always had an interast in differnt metaphysical studies, but was discouraged from exploring them as a child. Now that I am older, on my own and able to study what I choose, I have begun to study tarot, and upon, purchacing the Thoth deck, became increasingly interasted in astrology. Crowley associates the two very closely it appears.

When I was about 15 I went on a date that didn't go well. I described the boy I went out with to my friends older sister, who was really into astrology. She asked if I knew his birthdate, which I did (coincidence?) and she told me of some of the issues an Aries (me) and a Cancer (him) might experience. She was so accurate I decided to study it from that day on. I'm now 29 and yes, going through my first Saturn Return in Cancer.
Never had one done professionally.

In my opnion astrology can really ehance your understanding of the self and of where you are heading in your life and also help you have a deeper understanding of your past and why things happen in your life.
I think what makes a good astrologer is one who is tune with the big picture. One who has a true passion to understand and learn the depths of astrology. A good mathetican is also benefical.
I feel that the North and South Node in ones chart is extremely important and proves to be accurate in alot of ways.

Years and years ago, my ex girlfriend was very much into sun sign astrology. She was a Capricorn and I was/am a Taurus. Because of her it didn't take me too long to work out that most of our friends seemed to be earth signs as well. After I split up with her I also noticed that I seemed to attract, and be attracted to, other earth signs as well. It was then that I noticed that despite the skeptics, there must be some truth in astrology. I left it at that until years later when I read Carol Golder's "Moon Signs for Lovers" which a flatmate of mine had a copy of. This opened up a whole new world for me and introduced me to the fact that other planetary influences come into play as well. However it wasn't until I turned about 28 (like everyone else!) that I really began to study astrology in any depth...
I've never actually had a "real live" reading with an actual astrologer. Sure I've done all the free online ones. but as I've learned more about astrology I've found that I can make more and more sense of my own natal chart, as well as the charts of others. I would consider a consultation with an astrologer but I'm a single dad who doesn't really have that sort of money. Yeah I know, probably a lame excuse, I could find the money if I wanted to...

Mainly from the wealth of information that is available on the internet, In recent times though, I've begun to purchase a lot of books on the subject including some classic works from the likes of Liz Greene and Dane Rudhyar. I consider myself very passionate about astrology but I think I've really only begun to skim the surface - I still have a lot to learn but I would say I'm getting quite competent at Natal Chart readings - possibly a good place to start if you ask me... There is something I can do however and even my friends will vouch for me here - in about 60-70% of cases, within 5 minutes of being with someone, I can usually tell them what their sun sign is. I don't normally admit to this and I'm not blowing my own trumpet here, but I'm a bit drunk right now and I guess that's why I mentioned it...
Mainly the fact that it's an exercise in metaphor and symbolism. Like a lot of you here I get into the theories of Carl Jung as well as the theories present in eastern beliefs such as Buddhism. I guess to me astrology is an extension of that...
I'd say an ability to grasp the aforementioned metaphor and symbolism, but not only that, the ability to understand the myriad of forms that being a human entails, to be open minded and aware of the symbolism inherant in different belief systems, and the abilty to be non-biased and non-judgemental. I guess having a passionate interest in the subject certainly helps too... and the talent needed for things like chart "synthesis"...
Thanks Nancy for your many excellent websites - this one in particular would be one of the better astrology resource sites out there. I haven't really begun to explore it's depths though but I do follow your recommendations on amazon.com - I tend to find your opinions and reviews on that site to be balanced and reliable and consequently I've purchased many books on the basis of those recommendations - so I'd like to thank you for that as well as the chance to offer some feedback like this on your website...

What is there not to like about this very intense sign? I've been infatuated by a certain Scorpio woman for months now and despite the fact I find her challenging, I often find she makes me challenge myself in a lot of ways. All I can say is this - when she's bad, she's really bad, but when she's good, she's exceptional! The stars! We had telescopes and attended star parties. And I saw ET when I was 5, I think. I was fascinated that people had birthstones and was always interested in figuring out whose birthstones were what. My favorite comic was "Nancy" (!) in the paper, and the astrological forecasts were next to it. I read them allowed to family members.
Really, it has been a very certain pull always, disguised in many, many, masks. So many that I'm laughing at the absurdity of myself.

Someone who won't tell you something that will scare the crap out of you. I once read in a book that people with their rising sign in Scorpio usually loses their first spouse to death. My rising sign is in Scorpio, and my husband is currently in Iraq, so I worry constantly.
My sun sign (leo)is my favorite, but if I have to choose another, it'd be Libra. Just for their sunny disposition, and their open-mindedness.

By reading a plethora of websites like astrology.com, astrologyonline.com, astrology-numerology.com, alabe.com, astro. com etc, as well as reading many, many books over the years such as Linda Goodman's books and Jan Spiller's books ( I LOVED Astrology for the Soul by Jan Spiller)
I like the archetypal figures and symbols it uses. I also enjoy the sheer science of it. I have noticed after years of doing an objective inventory of everyone in my life, irrefutable patterns of element and sign in their behaviour. I love this element of astrology.
Someone who is intuitive. I don't enjoy stricty "predictive" astrology as in "oooh, this day should be very interesting for you, bla blah" as that's too random, I enjoy more of a very in-depth character analysis and possible suggestions for having a happier life and dealing with difficult aspects etc.
I enjoy the mental freedom this sign occupies and represents... I have my South node in Aquarius, so there's probably some residual ties to the sign. :)

I like best the sense that our lives are connected to a greater order (or disorder!) of things...it actually offers us a lot of power...that idea that because we're connected, we can energetically shape the world and effect real change.

The question arose in my mind that why they suffer?There must be a reason that some suffer and some not.Then I read most of religions and found the answer that is due to our own Karmas Then question arose how to come to know which karma lead to what and what are its effects? and so on numerous questions and then started learning most of occult studies of the world and then Astrology too.

I believe the interest emerged in my late teens when I revisited a chart and reading from ten or so years earlier. My mother purchased charts and readings for both of us. I don't remember being present at my own reading though. I remember finding the tape years later and listening to the conversation between the astrologer and she.
There is also a deep current that draws me toward the unseen hand that shapes all things. Astrology helps me to navigate those uncharted waters.
I was around 9 or ten. I also purchased the psychological horoscope reading from Astro.com about 4 years ago and about a year ago, I refered to my chart on astro.com and compiled a 24 page resource on all of my planets, houses and aspects. It is helpful though it leaves a lot to be desired in truly understanding my astrological make up.
Haven't had a real one since the age of nine or ten. I would like to request your services as my Saturn Return is upon me and I feel that I have stepped off the ";beaten path" moving further and further into the unknown. It would be fantastic to have a north star on this journey.

From the time that I was a child through today I've always been interested in Astrology. There have been times in my life where I've needed its guidance more than at other times. I find it funny that there are people that see Astrology as some sort of trivial pursuit. If the tides govern people's emotions and life cycles, certainly shouldn't the astros have a great influence on life path's? Maybe one day they'll get it!
I think I was 5 years old. My family is from Cuba so they are more receptive to the occult and mystical sides that are prevalent on the island. It was around the time that I had been diagnosed with epilepsy and my grandmother took me to have my cards read and they told her that I was more in tune with the other planes than they themselves were. Still working on developing more of that to this day!
I haven't had my chart read in a long while--last time was probably around 4 years ago--and as far as having my cards read, the last time that I went the lady that reads them--92 years old and as strong as an ox--she said that overall my life would be relatively problem free. She just said to stop giving her my money and to put it to better use. She also, as the elderly often do, told me to stop wearing such dark colors all the time and to work on reigning in my anger. Funny how she knew that about me!

Self-taught through reading several books on the topic plus a lot of really great websites and a lot of practice, research and general interest and intuition. Not a pro but not really a beginner at this point any more.
I like that there are certain elements that are unique to each person and that everyone comes to this plane with a purpose and if you look inward and in your chart you can see what you are fated to do and use it as a tool in planning or at least determining where your inclinations lie.
A good astrologer is positive in outlook even when faced with negativity, is expansive and willing to adopt newer methods rather than sticking with old school ways--such as not including Chiron and asteroids in charts as one example. Also, they are not solely logical in thought but are balanced with a very spiritual and innate intutitive sense.
My favorite signs are Gemini, Aries & Leo because it figures so prominently in my chart and as a result those are the people that I've attracted into my life for better or worse and they bring out the best in me. Water signs and Earth signs can tax me a lot more because it's not an intuitive interaction with them. It takes great effort to understand their modus operandi.

I can't remember how I learned about astrology. I have been interested in quite awhile. It seems to resonate within me and I think it is an interesting practice.
I think about 18 or 19.
Every couple of months or so. I read my horoscope almost daily and I frequent a few astrology sites. I haven't had a "formal" reading in quite awhile.

An ad in one of the New York tabloids for a report you could send for called the Life-Luck Horoscope, that would give you lucky days and numbers and times and such. This was in 1975. I actually used the information to hit the daily Pick-3 number straight on Nov. 17, 1975, virtually the first time I even had attempted to play the daily state lottery. That led me to the library and Edward Lyndoe's book Astrology for Everyone and when i did my horoscope on a paper plate and saw Saturn rising exactly on my Ascendant, well, I knew it was some sort of terrific omen. And that led me into a more serious study of astrology, and I've been scrutinizing my chart, along with progressions and transits, very carefully ever since.
Aside from computer horoscopes via mail, I have never had a sitdown reading with a professional astrologer.

Read every book and astrology magazine I could get my hands on, had my own horoscope generated by computer complete with 90 years of secondary progressions.
I just find it simply fascinating -- the planets, the fixed stars, the general symbolism of same, the retrogrades esp. of the inner planets, the whole celestial drama as it unfolds. Also, it has given me wonderful insights into good and bad times regarding health, and health in general based on the birth horoscope.
Hard question to answer. A lifetime of study, esp. of one's own birthchart, is probably a requisite.

It probably started out when I was a little kid and my mother would chide me for being scared about things by saying that I was a Leo and Leos are supposed to be brave. Later in college, an ex-best friend of mine was obsessed with astrology and got me into it -- especially with regards to relationships.
I had my first computer generated reading when I was about 25. My first reading with an actual astrologer was when I was 28 -- go figure :) She informed me I was at the beginning of my Saturn Return -- I'd just left my abusive fiance.
Since my first full natal reading, I've had two others in a span of a year (including one from a Vedic astrologer) and consult them every so often as questions and issues arise in my life -- of which there have been many as of late.

: Hmmm...I like how it helps me find my strengths and weaknesses as well as illuminate certain external events, which in turn help me with synthesizing the two.
A good astrologer is a great synthesizer -- he/she is able to take all the disparate pieces of the puzzle of energies that form a person and the circumstances of that person's life and figure out how it all fits together to make a whole. Such an ability is greatly helped by a thorough knowledge of both classical and modern astrology but also a deep intuition and imagination. Ultimately, a good astrologer is a healer who isn't afraid to cause some short term pain (in terms of telling the truth plainly) in order to promote long term health.

Ah, Scorpio! There are many a time when I wish upon a star that I was born a Scorpio. Perhaps, it's the whole power thing -- I've just learned that it's really that unseen power behind the glitzy throne that makes things happen. It isn't just that -- people take Scorpios seriously because they are icebergs -- because you don't know what's going to come out of them but whatever it is it's going to rock your world. I just wish I was the silent, mysterious type -- instead of a bubbly Libra rising Leo Sun Libra Moon. Oh, well, I take comfort that in my progressed chart I'm a Virgo with Scorpio Rising and Scorpio Moon (though that's proving to be a difficult passage). Scorpios, when they've mastered themselves, seem to get to the core of things and get things done. Besides, they are super sexy, and if they love you, they'll fight to the death for you.

I can't remember not having an interest in astrology. Even as a young child learning to read, I looked for my daily horoscope in the newspaper. My interest in astrology heightened during my teens when I learned that astrology surpasses the basic sun signs.
I think I was about fifteen or sixteen at the time of my first reading. I actually did it using a comprehensive astrology book that helped me to map out my chart.
Professionally, once every couple of years. I am always on astrology websites though. There is an online website that calculates my chart reading for me and it's pretty accurate. I try to look at it every day.

Through astrology books and websites. I've taken a seminar from a Seattle astrologer but he was pretty advanced. While I know a lot about the different planets and signs, he expected his participants to be able to calculate their own birth charts by hand. Unfortunately, astrology is not second nature to me yet.
I find astrology to be intensely accurate in my life. I find that it gives my life deeper meaning. I also believe that in one's life, certain times are better to do things than at other times. For example, I don't want to do certain things when Mercury is in retrograde because I'll have annoying consequences.
A good astrologer is astute and cares about his or her clients. He or she should know astrology like the back of his or her hand. Also, an astrologer should work with the client to help them make the right decisions during the right planetary influences. A lot of it is also psychology because the astrologer should point out challenges in the chart in addition to positive strengths.
I would love, love, love to become a professional astrologer but I don't think I'd be able to do it without a mentor. There is a lot to know and learn.

Aries falls during my favorite time of the year, Springtime! I always begin to feel very rejuvinated during this time of the year. I admire Aries' powerful dispositions. They are the exact opposite of my personality and nature. I wish I could just charge ahead instead of being so reserved and shy at times. Aries also have a lot of sexual magnetism. When I found out that I was not a good planner as I thought I was. My feelings were to investigate further than what was presently known. My findings blew me away. I am a late bloomer. In reading material astrology was always my choice.
Curiously in my late twenties, I'd seen a fortune teller and she was correct, I'd painted myself in a corner. I made an oath with myself that I would stay up on the cosmos and be best prepared for whatever came my way.
Not very often, I like to rely on myself. But, when I'm uncertain you can bet your booties that a connection will be made to get a reading from someone that my intuition tells me is a good choice.

I think it is the most fascinating science to find out about our self. To find out about our children and be able to be a light unto them in ways they are not aware of. This applies to other family and friends as well.
A mixture of different things. Some are born with a gift that transcends in their life, some have different experiences. In either case most are sensitive as I find myself to be in different circumstances. For the most part a good one allows your requests to be submitted to a higher vibration and then responds to you on what is important.
